This three song EP from Jonathan Wilson and Milton Nascimento was not what I expected. I am a fan of both artists, but Moon Over Minas caught me off guard! It is a reverb-soaked, haunting, and psychedelic listen that leans much more to the sound of an early-ish Pink Floyd album than it does a world music record. In fact, beyond the washy Brazilian percussion flourishes, and the Tropicália-ish groove of "Lilia", nothing else suggests Latin music at all. Instead, Moon Over Minas is a cinematic endevour that highlights a different side of Nascimento, and although you can hear Wilson's '70s-influenced songwriting peeking through on "Valley of the Silver Moon," it is more a showcase of their collaboration that creates its own unique hazey, surfy sound.
