Out on tour with Wednesday right now, and ahead of tour dates throughout 2026 with Touché Amoré and Ovlov (not to mention two nights in September with Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age), Gouge Away have released a new single, “Figurine”, their debut on Run For Cover Records. What makes this news very Tape Op is that the band tracked “Figurine” last month at Portland’s Jackpot! Recording Studio with Tape Op's editor/founder Larry Crane engineering, producing, and mixing, plus the fabulous Doma Rocket assisting all day and cleaning up!
Shortly after the session wrapped, Larry documented the experience, spoiler free, in a post on the Jackpot! Recording Studio Substack titled “Write It Down.”
The entry reads like a quick snapshot of the session, touching on the Larry and the band’s approach in the room. There are several fun nuggets as well, from scans of the paper input list to the source of the 2-inch tape they used [24-track tape (+6, 15 ips, no NR, IEC EQ)], plus an inspired moment shared between the producer/engineer and a musician. The post leaves you with a simple truth: Take notes and stay on track!
If you’re curious about how “Figurine” came together, Larry’s post is worth a look. The single itself is out now via Run For Cover Records. Also check out Tape Op's interview with Jack Shirley who has produced previous albums for Gouge Away.
Tape Op is a bi-monthly magazine devoted to the art of record making.
