Unfinished Business: The Life and Times of Danny Gatton

REVIEWED BY Larry Crane

ISSUE NO. 41 May 15, 2004

Danny Gatton was one of the most versatile and technically amazing guitar players to ever walk this earth before his suicide in 1994. Ralph Heibutzki (who interviewed Norman Dayron for us in Tape Op #25) covers Danny's life and frustrating career in this book, with ample info on Danny's fascinating quest for guitar tone perfection and his studio perfectionism that drove engineers like Ed Eastridge crazy. It's an engrossing read and a story with a sad end, but the beauty and ability in Danny's playing is still there on the handful of albums he released. ($17.95; www.chairmanralph.com)
