Dangerous Music: BAX500 EQ

I never imagined that the bass and treble controls as seen on home and car stereos for decades would follow me into my professional life. That ubiquitous EQ circuit, designed by Peter Baxandall, was reimagined in 2010 for professional audio applications by Chris Muth [Tape Op #45] and the team at Dangerous Music when they released their BAX EQ [#79]. After I heard it skillfully applied to some of my work by several mastering engineers, I thought about buying a unit for myself. I hesitated long enough to discover the Dangerous Music BAX EQ plug-in from Brainworx and started there. My team and I have used it as a mono or stereo insert on clients' projects, but I always wondered whether or not the analog hardware sounded better. At NAMM 2026, Dangerous Music unveiled the BAX500 as a single channel of BAX EQ adapted for the 500 Series format. That was the inspiration I needed to finally satisfy my curiosity.

When I unboxed my BAX500, I was surprised by its substantial weight, as I knew the audio path was transformerless. I was admittedly unsurprised by its exceptional, fully American manufacturing. The hand-soldered circuitry is protected by a shielded enclosure, and the faceplate is nicely finished all the way around. Control labels and position markers are first laser-engraved, then filled in with paint to prevent fading from everyday contact with busy hands. The front panel is straightforward, but the BAX500 is neither a repackaged Baxandall tone control circuit from a vintage hi-fi nor a typical shelving EQ.

The BAX500 offers two shelving bands with highly adjustable filters and a truly linear phase response. Independent controls for each band include an eight-position rotary switch to shift the (peak) shoulder frequency, an eight-position rotary switch to select the (12 dB/octave) filter cutoff frequency, and a non-detented potentiometer to set the (+/-5 dB) gain. A non-latching button engages or bypasses the entire circuit via relays.

The frequencies listed around the Hi Shelf knob are an octave below the actual shoulder and roughly at the midpoint of the lower Q slope. On most Hi Shelf settings, the shoulder is in the (inaudibly high) ultrasonic range. The practical result of boosting that band is a continuous rise of energy starting an octave below the selected shelf frequency and extending up past the limits of human hearing. The Hi Cut filter is useful for tone shaping on that band or discreetly removing any ultrasonic artifacts from A/D converters and the induction of RF noise into the audio path. The frequencies listed around the Low Shelf knob directly correspond to the shoulder of that band, so the upper slope of the Q reaches about two octaves into the lower midrange. Once again, the very wide Q means that boosting the Low Shelf will also increase (inaudibly low) infrasonic energy. The Low Cut filter is useful for tone shaping on that band or shutting out infrasonic rumble and DC offset.

I installed the BAX500 into my BAE 500 Series rack, which was highly modded by Creation Audio Labs. Its external power supply is a linear design by Avedis Kifedjian [#132] of Avedis Audio. My audio interface is a Prism Sound Titan with a Dangerous Music SOURCE as my analog monitor controller. Power conditioning for my hybrid setup is a Chang Light Speed CLS 6400, and all of the audio cabling is Mogami, just like all the point-to-point wiring inside the BAX500. Once I fired up my system, I had an idea of what to expect but sought to remain as objective as possible.

Adding sparkle or air to vocals can be a challenge in mixing. Most inexpensive condenser mics feature high-frequency harshness that is seemingly intended to keep DIY vocalists humble and keep mix engineers in business. However, boosting the Hi Shelf on the BAX500 and dialing down the Hi Cut worked better for adding sheen to dull or slightly grainy vocal tracks than any convoluted methods I can recall using. Similar settings and more Low Cut on a Cloud Microphones 44 passive ribbon mic was money. When we compared the Brainworx plug-in to the BAX500 with all settings identical, it was not a close race. The Brainworx plug-in sounded two-dimensional and generally underwhelming. The BAX500 conveyed natural dynamics with ease and made every vocal sound much bigger.

After a brief period of experimenting with the BAX500, I learned that modest adjustments to shelf and filter settings can quickly reshape the tonal balance of any source. Sometimes tracks or stems are simply bottom heavy or top heavy but require more finesse than a tilt EQ and more musical coherence than a traditional shelving EQ. The BAX500 Hi Shelf gain sounds breathtakingly clear and smooth, and its Low Shelf gain sounds powerful and tight. Even when fully boosting both shelves at opposite ends of the audio spectrum, the BAX500 sounds natural because its wide shelves also influence midrange frequencies. Because the infrasonic and ultrasonic frequencies it amplifies are highly problematic for modern studio tools, everything sounds supreme and functions best when both filters on the BAX500 remain engaged.

While full-sized EQ circuits do not often translate well to the 500 Series format, Dangerous Music pulled it off without compromise. Audio Precision screenshots confirm that the BAX500 is sonically indistinguishable from the famed BAX EQ. Many other EQs alter phase response, trading focus and nuance for punch and character. The BAX500 is not merely transparent; it sounds profoundly revealing and natural. The circuit delivers an honest and authoritative output with an engaging touch of softness and intimacy. The BAX500 can elevate any outboard vocal chain or be a secret weapon in hybrid mixing and stem mastering. Consider the BAX500 a daily driver. It may not fully redeem every rough track it graces, but it can certainly add sweetness and depth. Its impact on nicer recordings can be downright sublime.
