ISIS: SGNL05 CD

REVIEWED BY Roman Sokal

ISSUE NO. 24 July 15, 2001

ISIS blend minimalist-dub, music concrete and heavy churning tribal psychedelic drone to create a hypnotically intense listening experience. Recorded at the Outpost in Stoughton, MA, as well as involving a bit of home recording, this EP (a continuation of a series that originated on Escape Artist Records) contains some of the most punishing drums unheard of since John Bonham walked the earth. The bottom end is beyond heavy and saturated - it infiltrates and levels every living thing in its path, just like an atomic explosion does. Nice. Also includes a challenging remix by Godflesh's Justin Broadrick. (www.neurotrecordings.com)
