New Music From SUNN O)))

How low can you go? Few bands today (too few?) can wear black cloaks, tune their instruments so low that the strings are in a state just above completely slack, turn the amps up as loud as they will go, and bathe the listener in the slowest, heaviest doom metal sound bath possible. Seattle's SUNN O)))'s new self-titled album delivers the sludge in spades. The album was produced and mixed by the band's Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson alongside Brad Wood [Tape Op #99], and was recorded at Bear Creek Studios [# 157] in Woodinville, WA.

It is an apocalyptic ambient soundscape of bias-fuzz feedback, speaker death, and the slow motion crumbling of ancient stone monoliths, but it also skirts the edges of experimental improvisational jazz and meditational drone music. Crank it up for complete sonic immersion, or turn it down to barely audible for a more Brian Eno-esque [Tape Op #85] experience.
