New Podcast series “Overdubbed with SASAMI” from Tape Op and Gold Diggers Studios
We interviewed Sasami Ashworth back in Tape Op #157 and she’s also featured in our new book, Making Music: Conversations With Record Producers. Now, we’re excited to announce a new podcast series that Sasami, or SASAMI as she’s known professionally, has produced and brought to us, called Overdubbed with SASAMI.
The first two episodes, with Jack Antonoff and hemlocke springs, are out now!
Sasami has been playing music for a long time and is a talented songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, keyboard and French horn player, producer, and engineer and she brings all those skills to this new series. What many people might not know is that she’s also a serious student of mycology. In case you didn’t know what that means, it’s the study of mushrooms, and Sasami is an avid forager of said mushrooms.
About two years ago, she moved to a small town about 15 miles from my studio, Panoramic House, in West Marin, CA. We connected over a cup of coffee, and she ended up cutting a few vocal tracks in our B-room for her LP, Blood on the Silver Screen. After that, I would occasionally get a text from Sasami along the lines of, “Hey what’s going on at the studio? Is it cool if I come by and look for some mushrooms?” It turns out that the grounds of our studio have a few particular fertile patches of chanterelle mushrooms that would sprout up after a rain. It was always nice to have her over for a visit, and we’d often chat for a few when she was done with her foraging. On one such occasion, she said, “Hey, I have an idea for a podcast I want to do for Tape Op!” And now, a year or so later, here we are debuting Overdubbed’s first episode with Jack Antonoff.
People may also not know that Sasami initially played French horn within the classical music sphere, graduated from the Eastman School of Music, and did a lot of session work on French horn. Yep. Check out the photo below of Sasami and Van Dyke Parks [Tape Op #145] for proof.
Thanks also to our pals Simon Horrocks and Dave Trumfio [Tape Op #16] at Gold-Diggers Studio who are hosting the event in their amazing Hollywood complex, as well as a thanks to Shure for providing their new Nexadyne 8 microphones for the series.
Tape Op is a bi-monthly magazine devoted to the art of record making.
