New Stereo Soundbook

REVIEWED BY Larry Crane

ISSUE NO. 24 July 15, 2001

You know a book is good when other engineers force a copy on you to read, as happened when Jeff Saltzman sent me off with a copy of the first edition of this last year. Now the second edition is out and luckily I don't have to give it back this time! This book should be like a bible to us engineers. It's technical, yes - and mathematical at times (yipes) but the main benefit of this book is that it will make you think about how you work with the stereo "illusion" and what effects it has on the listener. It delves into surround, micing techniques, binaural, and optimizing the listening environment - but the real learning for me was how people perceive stereo and what makes them hear the "space" around a sound. Important stuff to learn and a book that will probably change the way you work in subtle and positive ways. (AEA, www.wesdooley.com)
