Playback

REVIEWED BY Larry Crane

ISSUE NO. 41 May 15, 2004

Any book that lists a timeline of recorded music reproduction on its back cover that goes from Edison's cylinder in 1877 to Apple launching iTunes is gonna hold some interest to Tape Op readers. A very well-written book, Coleman examines the many changes in playback technology and the backlashes from musicians and composers that have accompanied every "advance." Looking at the large picture, one starts to really see the music industry in a new perspective. This is a quick read (208 pages), and I recommend it to anyone involved in making music intended for playback.

Tape Op is a bi-monthly magazine devoted to the art of record making.
