We interviewed both Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Erasure) and Daniel Miller (Mute Records, The Normal) in Tape Op #110. Collectively they are Sunroof, and have just released Electronic Music Improvisations, Vol.3.

This collection follows Electronic Music Improvisations Vol.1 and Vol.2, and is, as the title suggests, two electronic music wizards improvising live on modular synths.

The album works as both a groovy listening experience as well as a low-volume, ambient accompaniment to your day. I had it on in headphones (recommended for the full listening experience) walking around the city, and I felt like a character in my own sci-fi film.

Stand out tracks are the dark and groovy “Ensnare”, the frenetic and syncopated “Freezer”, the lunar landscape vibes of “Link”, and “Conspiracies”, which reminds me of Mezzanine-era Massive Attack.

Along with Suzanne Ciani, Larry Fast, Wendy Carlos, Dave Smith, Rival Consoles, Morton Subotnick, Steve Roach, and Lisa Bella Donna, to name just a few, Sunroof is essential electronic music listening.

Tape Op is a bi-monthly magazine devoted to the art of record making.
