New song, video, and album from Moby

I’ve been following Moby for several decades now as he’s moved between different styles and phases of his career. I can’t say I love everything he’s done, but I really do like quite a bit of it. 1999’s Play was his fifth album and a huge commercial success, but 1995’s Everything Is Wrong and Animal Rights from 1996 are my two favorite albums of that era. In 2013 and 2018 he released Innocents and Everything Is Beautiful, And Nothing Hurt which are both great albums that combined instrumentals as well as tracks with guest vocalists. Some live videos from this era really showcase the breadth of his songwriting, arranging, and production. The track “Almost Home” with Damien Jurado on Innocents is a stand out.

Alex McKenzie interviewed Moby for Tape Op #73 in 2009, and there are some cool photos in that piece of his then massive vintage drum machine collection.

Thanks to a sync in the Netflix show Stranger Things, his music is getting another listen from a new audience. He’s getting ready to release a new mostly ambient LP, Future Quiet, on Feb 20 and the first track and video for a new version of  “When It’s Cold I’d Like to Die” featuring vocals from Jacob Lusk of Gabriels are out now. It’s a beautiful track, and I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of the album when it’s released.

Tape Op is a bi-monthly magazine devoted to the art of record making.
