The Chicago-based band, Brigitte Calls Me Baby, has just released Irreversible, produced by Yves Rothman and Lawrence Rothman [Tape Op #155]. The pairing showcases the premium placed on songwriting and arrangement. Top to bottom, Irreversible is a very enjoyable collection of well-written songs that were meticulously recorded and mixed at Lawrence's home studio in Los Angeles. The album leans heavily on '80s New Wave references like The Cure, Simple Minds, The Smiths/Morrissey, Bryan Ferry, Human League, INXS, and New Order to name a few. Brigitte Calls Me Baby frontman Wes Leavins croons with the confidence of a chart-topping band of another era, and it works! Although the recording and overall sound of Irreversible has a foot firmly rooted in today's modern sonics, it also pays homage to what would now be considered 1980s "classics" throughout the album's 11 tracks. If they make a The Breakfast Club reunion movie, the music supervisors can start here for the soundtrack.
