Dalek

Dalek: Hip-Hop from space?

It's not everyday you hear a band that makes music unlike anything you've heard before. When I first heard Dalek it made me feel really good to know that someone was making truly challenging music. When I hear that there are innovative and different acts like Outkast and NERD in the hip-hop community, I fail to be impressed after hearing how much farther Dalek pushes things. Combining the intensity and size of Led Zeppelin (the group is also rivaling them in debaucherous tour stories at this point) with the soundfield of My Bloody Valentine, all in a hip-hop context. It's like the first time you hear a group like Can and you realize how unbelievably natural it is for a group to be so different from what's going on in popular culture at the time. The group's members, Dalek, Oktopus and Still, all create and produce music both for themselves and others. Dalek has worked with 2nd Gen, Funkstorung, Jett Brando, and the Lapse. Oktopus — a.k.a. Alop Momin — has recorded bands such as All Natural Lemon Lime Flavors, Chisel, Rye Coalition and Jets to Brazil. The group has just wrapped up the recording of their second full length, and recently released a 12" split on Matador with Techno Animal. This interview took place at Sweetwood Sound and was recorded on a Lawson L47MP into Sound Forge to get the true recording-nerd experience down.

6Q British Channel

by 6Q British Channel  |  reviewed by John Baccigaluppi

We track a lot of bands in my studio that end up taking their rhythm tracks home and finishing overdubs and mixing in their home PC based studio. After using our mic and preamp collection, my clients face the return to their Mackie mixers and often ask me, "What kind of mic pre should I buy?"...

737 Tube Mic Pre/Compressor/EQ

by 737 Tube Mic Pre/Compressor/EQ  |  reviewed by John Baccigaluppi

At first I had a hard time getting a feel for this unit because I had expectations for it that ended up being false. Before I got it, I had the idea I was gonna use it for snare drum. But after using it a few times, it just didn't rock my world very much. It wasn't bad, but I wanted something a...

Altiverb Sampling Reverb

by Altiverb Sampling Reverb  |  reviewed by Eric Broyhill, John Baccigaluppi, Henry Robinett

This is one very amazing, albeit very specialized, piece of software. It will only run on a Macintosh G4 (using the Mac's Altivec co-processor) and only with Digital Performer (Although a VST and RTAS version is expected soon). Altiverb only does one thing, but it does it amazingly well. It is a...

CS-9

by CS-9  |  reviewed by Steve Silverstein

Once upon a time, notable bands like Wire and the Cure used chorus as a creative effect. By the mid-'80s, so many bands had so brutalized the effect that engineers and musicians everywhere shuddered at the notion of using chorus at all. Even mega-celebrities like Nirvana's championing of the Small...

Digimax mic preamp/limiter with digital output

by Digimax mic preamp/limiter with digital output  |  reviewed by Ed Pettersen

The PreSonus Digimax is an ingenious device. I purchased it initially as an interface with my Pro Tools LE rig at home to provide eight more 24-bit clean converter channels rather than rely on the analog inputs provided by Digidesign. Though I've found the analog inputs in my LE box to be useful...

Kosmos Sub Harmonic Generator

by Kosmos Sub Harmonic Generator  |  reviewed by Oz Fritz

This unit rocks! Kosmos puts out the bass - bass with attitude, an attitude that translates as tight, punchy, low end in extreme abundance. It even has what I would call an "exciter" function. Peavey refers to this as a "stereo image enhancement system." Kosmos is a stereo device with balanced...

LTD-2 Compressor

Chandler is making a buzz for themselves as the small company that builds Neve-based mic pres and compressors. The LTD-2 is a Class A, single channel compressor based on the Neve 2254 (and similar to the 2264 and 33609), in some cases using actual circuit boards from Neve gear but in other cases...

MP-2NV 2 channel mic pre

by MP-2NV 2 channel mic pre  |  reviewed by Larry Crane

This is another fine product in the "Mercenary Edition" line, meaning that it's endorsed, used by and has passed the test of Fletcher and crew at Mercenary Audio. It's two channels of solid state preamps, with transformers going in and out, and is based on the electronics and sound of the classic...

M-series Microphone Cables

by M-series Microphone Cables  |  reviewed by John Baccigaluppi

I've never been one of those audiophile types who felt like I needed all my cables to be super expensive one gauge 2" thick cables that cost $35 a foot. But when I had the opportunity to try some of these pricey Zaolla cables I figured, "Why not?" The packaging that came with it extolled the...

In my continuing quest to find a microphone that emulates a KM-84 for less money, when I was given the opportunity to check these mics out, I quickly said, "Yes". This is a straight-ahead small diaphragm cardioid condenser that retails for $100. I was doing a session the day after they came and...

by Nuendo version 1.5.2  |  reviewed by Mike Reavill

A few months ago I was in the market for better DAW multitrack software. I had previously been using Cakewalk Pro, which was lacking in a few areas to me. I already knew Pro Tools was out of the question, I mean ten thousand dollars for an entry level system, come on. That's when I was turned on to...

The "Fat Man" compressor features stereo 1/4" balanced inputs and outputs, 15 presets and manual operation, an affordable price ($460 list) and is housed in an unusual 1/2 rack width, wedge-shaped package (with an angled top that you can't set a beer on). The "tube" is a single 12AX7A running...

This is an amazing piece of gear, I mean, uh, software. Welcome to Reason, the latest release by Propellerhead, the company that pioneered the virtual instrument/sampler scene with Rebirth and Recycle. Silver Coax S/PDIF cables MC2 digital cables

by Silver Coax S/PDIF cables MC2 digital cables  |  reviewed by Brian Lucey

Cables are huge in overall tone color for both digital and analog recording. I'm beginning to realize how different DI boxes can be. I don't know if it's just my awareness of them or what, but it seems like there are more active direct boxes available now than there ever were. I first stumbled across the Avalon U5 last year while recording The Walkabouts in Seattle. When I asked Floyd Reitsma (my trusty assistant at Studio...
