Temples of Sound Inside the Great Recording Studios

REVIEWED BY John Baccigaluppi

ISSUE NO. 33 January 15, 2003

This super cool book showed up in the mail the day before we went to print, but I still managed to read half of this well written homage to 15 classic recording studios last night. In fact I had a hard time putting it down so I could get the mag finished and off to the printer! Each chapter has some vintage photos and a few pages of text covering each studio. The focus here is on the human, rather than technical, side of each studio, which makes for a fun read for both experienced engineers but also any music fan. There are some minor technical errors (like referring to console outputs as 'tracks'), but they're inconsequential. This is an exteneded love letter to the magic of the recording studio. There's also an appendix of 12 classic albums from each studio; Capitol, United Western Recorders, Sunset Sound, RCA B, Stax, Sun Studios,, J & M, Chess, Universal, Motown, Sigma Sound, Atlantic, Columbia, Van Gelder annd Criteria. Good stuff. (www.chroniclebooks.com)
