Many words have been written over the years in Tape Op about the pros and cons of analog and digital recording. Based on the VU meter pictograph on the cover of Analog by Robert Hassan, you might think you would find more discussion on that topic, but you would be wrong. Though there is some examination of analog audio, this is a much more “zoomed out” book that examines the devices that we use as humans, beginning with early analog tools, such as the Gutenberg printing press, through the present-day plethora of digital platform solutions we use today. It’s a short, but serious read. The author shares a strong conclusion and thesis in this book, but I won’t give it away. So, if you’re interest is piqued, I highly suggest reading Analog.
