Adrian Parzentny, author: Audio Nomad (book)

REVIEWED BY Larry Crane - editor

Subtitled Recording 2 Years in Morocco, I'm not sure if this book is a memoir, a travel story, or a remote-recording handbook, but it's certainly an interesting read. The author, Adrian "Ady" Parzentny, is an enthusiastically infectious sort, dragging us on a journey from Poland into Morocco while recording all sorts of local musicians in unusual spaces. He tells us about the people, the instruments, and how he recorded and mixed their music – plus there's a link to multitracks of 30 songs from this trip, so you can dig in and really hear what went right (or was difficult to fix) on these sessions. Some of the best notes include him dealing with instruments of varying volumes in a room or attempting to fix tracking problems in mixing. At 294 pages, it does get a little repetitive – imagine a guy with a small set of mics describing how he set up for a bunch of different, but mostly acoustic, groups. In fact, when a batch of Lewitt microphones showed up, I was excited to hear about using something new! But overall, the enthusiasm and adventures make for a compelling read, and you're bound to learn something here!
