Since the passing of his wife and Low bandmate, Mimi Parker, Alan Sparhawk [Tape Op #31] has been on a creative tear. His recent solo record, White Roses, My God, which I wrote up for this blog, is a keyboard-heavy offering with a heavily processed voice and almost no guitars. His latest release, Alan Sparhawk with Trampled by Turtles, is a 180-degree spin from the former release.
Primarily clean electric guitars accompanied by Duluth, Minnesota-based Trampled by Turtles' bluegrass-inspired acoustic instrumentation, the collection is a lovely palette for Sparhawk's voice and lyrics. The album is full of songs of tribute to, and processing the death of Parker. Especially notable, and personal favorites, are the opener "Stranger", "Screaming Song", "Get Still", and the album closer, "Torn & in Ashes".
Alan Sparhawk with Trampled by Turtles was produced and mixed by longtime Sparhawk collaborator Nat Harvie, and recorded at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota.
Dave Simonette from Trampled by Turtles wrote a piece for our blog a few years back, and you can read that HERE.
Tape Op is a bi-monthly magazine devoted to the art of record making.
