Danny Kroger and Lars Falck

Danny Kroger and Lars Falck

Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, The Script, The Raveonettes, Kaizers Orchestro or Tricky — it probably won't cross your mind that artists like these have worked in Copenhagen. In only five years Baby Factory has become one of the biggest recording studios in Scandinavia. I met up with Danny and Lars in their recording studio.

Joe Barresi Revisited

Joe Barresi Revisited

We first interviewed Joe Barresi in Tape Op #23. Heck, we even spelled his name wrong on the cover (sorry again, Joe). Here's an interview from 2010 with some more of Joe's history and interesting thoughts about making records. -Larry Crane, editor

Reinhold Mack

Reinhold Mack: ELO, Queen, Black Sabbath & T. Rex

"I did everything I did against the grain and in spite of people's opinions. All those supposedly great songs were done with no 'No's' — I don't think I could have done it any better doing it the 'right' way." Years ago a reader wrote in asking if we'd ever thought of interviewing a producer/engineer known simply as "Mack." Apparently this man had engineered a majority of the Electric Light Orchestra albums, co-produced some of Queen's best-known work, produced Billy Squier's biggest hits, as well as working with Sparks, Black Sabbath, T. Rex and many others. At the time I could not find this "Mack," and was unsure whether or not he was still in his native Germany. As years went by, I heard nothing. Then, one day, a member of the band Shazam (Jeremy Asbrock) claimed to be working with Reinhold Mack on a new album. He pointed me towards Mack; eventually I found myself sitting in a room full of platinum records and recording equipment chatting for several hours with a man who quietly changed the sound of modern pop records without making much of a fuss about it himself. You'll see...

1608 recording console

by 1608 recording console  |  reviewed by Marc Alan Goodman, John Baccigaluppi

Two opinions, the first from contributor Marc Alan Goodman, who is the owner/operator of Strange Weather in Brooklyn, and a second from publisher John Baccigaluppi, who owns The Hangar in Sacramento.  Both extol the flexibility afforded by the modular, 500-series design. Note that API recommends...

Creamer mic preamp

by Creamer mic preamp  |  reviewed by Kirt Shearer

I’ve said it before; I really like being in audio production right now. There is a seemingly endless supply of small manufacturers that are bringing innovative products to the market. This is certainly true in the area of mic preamps, for example. As digital recording has increasingly become “the...

HD I/O

Converters and clocks are hotly debated topics, and it’s been my opinion for a while now that the reason they’re such sore topics is that people are often trying to establish objective and definitive statements about them. Clocks, power supplies, converter chips, and analog components get discussed...

Pro Tools 9

by Pro Tools 9  |  reviewed by Allen Farmelo, Andy Hong

A couple months before the official unveiling of Pro Tools 9, Avid shared with the press that it was implementing significant changes to its customer value proposition. We were given a few sparse details, and there were of course rumblings on the various audio forums and blogs, but for the most...

Silent Way plug-in suite

by Silent Way plug-in suite  |  reviewed by Dana Gumbiner

Do you love analog synthesis? Great, let’s nerd out on Control Voltage for a bit. CV is essentially the analog equivalent and predecessor to MIDI. It’s a tried and true method used to control and interact with analog synths, drum machines, and sequencers. CV has been around for quite some time,...

The Indie Band Survival Guide

by The Indie Band Survival Guide  |  reviewed by Garrett Haines

Like it or not, bands view audio engineers as subject-matter experts when it comes to “the music industry.” And while you probably don’t mind providing pointers and suggestions, it’s simply not feasible to convey all of the things a new artist needs to know in a short amount of time. And to be fair...

XILS 3 LE

by XILS 3 LE  |  reviewed by John Baccigaluppi

This “matrix based modular synthesizer” softsynth, based on the EMS VCS 3, was an impulse purchase for me on AudioMIDI.com’s eBay store – one of their “No Brainer” plug-in deals. I figured at $20, what the heck! I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for old EMS synths, as I learned basic synthesis on an...

by Yardstick 2496  |  reviewed by Joel Hamilton, Andy Hong

Here I am, Tape Op’s Gear Geek, butting into an otherwise enthralling review from Joel Hamilton. After reading Joel’s draft of this review of the Yardstick, I asked him to send me the unit so I could take it for a spin, with a plan to add a brief second opinion as well as a bit of background to the...
