Linda Gerard: She's Fabulous

Some time back I was given the interesting job of restoring tapes and 7-inch singles on a unique project for the Ace Hotel and Swim Club in Palm Springs. I enlisted the aid of Jamie Howarth and his Plangent Processes (see #94URL) in saving these tapes from the early '70s. I was also able to transfer the vinyl as well as pull off some nice cleanup with iZotope's RX2 Advanced software. But all through the process, I was most fascinated by the artist, Linda Gerard, and what the story was behind her career and the studio sessions that these songs came from. Linda now works at Ace Hotel in Palm Springs as a hostess in the fine King's Highway restaurant where she's the center of a weekly "Sissy Bingo" night. She not only calls the numbers, she entertains the room with songs, stories and a ribald sense of humor. We got to chat with Linda after Sissy Bingo one Monday night, and it was a treat. Jamie Howarth: Behind the Gear with Plangent Processes

A while back I was working on a restoration process for an album that was long out of print. The only materials I had to work from were a ridiculously scratched vinyl LP and some 7-inch reference reels from the original session. When I played back the reels, I was horrified by the obvious pitch fluctuations on the tapes — it was enough to make me queasy. I recalled that I'd met Jamie Howarth, of Plangent Processes, some time before; given a basic understanding of his revolutionary technique, I assumed he could fix my problem. It worked. The process basically uses recovery of the bias tone off analog recordings to "realign" the audio to the state it was in while being tracked or mixed. Jamie's Plangent Process has helped restore recordings of Woody Guthrie, the Grateful Dead, and Neil Young, as well as solving many film audio problems. I had to learn more about this, and wanted others to know that this service is available, so I tracked down Jamie and picked his brain.

After I heard the CD I wanted to know how it all went down, so I tracked him and Adrian down in their hometown of Austin and learned the story of a rented house and trying but fun recording sessions. I was also lucky to catch live sets by Grupo and Brownout, a related band of Adrian's, where both groups delivered the goods to excited audiences.
